Credible Messengers: Empowerment, Desistance, and the Insight to Well-Being Program

Abstract

Resource-deprived communities with trans-diagnostic mental health issues find traditional psychological programming difficult to access and sustain. Prison environments further deplete resources for men, women, and youth who have the greatest need. The demand for models of care that provide consistent, sustainable, and extended support (in and outside of prison) has never been greater. This special event explores a novel community approach emerging in US and UK prisons and with youth in Scottland: The Insight to Well-Being program. For example, empirical evidence in a US women's prison and UK men's prison shows that, compared to control groups, treatment groups experienced significant improvement in levels of well-being, purpose in life, and self-control and significant decreases in levels of stress, anxiety, and aggression. Reduction in trauma-related symptoms and increases in psychological flexibility further support the unique opportunities of this intervention. The Insight to Well-Being program—honors lived experience—by listening to, training, and developing credible messengers for mental health and well-being. Some examples of policy and practice include (a) Class environments crafted for the co-creation of content; (b) Facilitators grounded in an innate health understanding, sharing personal stories of learning the material (lived experience); (c) Participants test the material they learn for themselves and are experts in their experience; (d) Those who find benefits to this process can join peer-mentor (one-to-one) or take on further mentoring training and support; and, (e) Finally, peer mentors can train to facilitate an Insight to Well-Being program. This special event will present an overview of the research, explore the implementation of Insight to Well-Being through the eyes of program directors (Beyond Recovery, Insight Alliance, & No Knives Better Lives), and share the lived experiences of two men with US and UK prison experience, who now deliver Insight to Well-Being in prisons and other resource depleted communities. This special event challenges conventional conversations by reflecting on and sharing voices and experiences that are absent from mainstream criminology and psychology. Join us at this special event to learn more about this unique prison program from the people who have lived and worked on the inside.
